JA Bowling Season: March – June 2011

Event Overview

Junior Achievement's Bowl-A-Thon is the largest event of its kind, and one of the most visible charitable events in the region.  The Bowl-A-Thon is a team-building, company-wide fundraiser that enables employees to have fun while raising money for Junior Achievement, whose mission is to educate students about workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs.   Thousands of employees from local companies come together to enjoy an evening of bowling, and a little competition among peers, while raising money to provide over 60,000 young people with JA's educational programs.

In 2010, the Bowl-A-Thon raised over $200,000 with nearly 3,000 bowlers.  This year our goal is to raise over $250,000 with over 4,000 bowlers!

Logistics

Each company chooses a coordinator who works with JA to arrange a date to bowl.  Coordinators recruit team captains who form teams of five people that raise money by getting flat pledges from friends, family, co-workers and neighbors. On the day of the event, bowlers arrive at their designated bowling center, register to bowl and then bowl 3 games while enjoying food, beverages and prizes while they are team-building and networking with co-workers.

Some of the local businesses that participate are:

AT&T

Comcast
Dick's Sporting Goods

Dollar Bank

Giant Eagle

Eat'n Park Hospitality Group
Enterprise Rent-A-Car

PNC Bank
Schneider Downs & Company

US Steel Corporation

What is required of your company to participate?

Your company will choose a company coordinator(s) who will work with Junior Achievement to arrange a date and location to bowl.  The company coordinator(s) also recruits team captains.  The captains will then, with the help of their coordinators, recruit bowlers for their teams (4 - 6 bowlers).

Each bowler is then responsible to collect his or her own pledges, flat not per pin, to be turned in the day of the event.  A minimum of $60 in pledges is required to participate, however the more money each bowler raises, the better the prizes!  JA provides each coordinator with tips for recruiting teams and raising money.

In addition to the minimum of $60 in pledges, there is also an entry fee of $50.00 per team, which is often paid by the participating company. The entry fee covers all event costs such as bowling lane fees for 3 games, shoe rental, pizza, beverages and snacks for every bowler.  If your company is unable to pay this fee, Junior Achievement will work with you to make other arrangements.

Bowler Prizes

$50 team entry fee + $60 minimum amount in pledges = 3 games of bowling, shoe rental, pizza, beverages, coupons and snacks
